How To Curl Hair with Straighteners (For All Lengths)

Did you know that you could curl hair with straighteners? Be it a nice beach wave or bouncy curls, follow this simple guide and style your dream curls today.

For this article (not sponsored), we will be styling our hair with ghd Platinum+, a styler that is said to be able to predict our hair’s needs and constantly adapt its power to ensure it is at optimum styling temperature at all times. How easy would it be to curl our hair with this device? Read on to find out.

What You Would Need

Before we begin, you are going to need a few items. They are:

  • Hair spray
  • Comb
  • Hair clips (butterfly clamps or prong clips) to help with the sectioning of your hair
  • Straightener (duh!)

Step 1: Prep Your Hair

Before curling (or straightening) your hair, it is a good habit to prep your hair with light- to firm-hold hairspray. This helps to ensure your curls stay longer and prevent it from falling flat just a few hours into your day.

Hair oil is a big no at this stage as you do not want to risk frying your hair.

With that said, do ensure that the hairspray is lightly sprayed to prevent your hair from becoming as stiff as a stick.

Tip: Run your fingers through your hair while using the hairspray to ensure there is enough coverage.

Step 2: Section Your Hair

Now that you have gotten the hairspray done, move on to section your hair. This step is important in ensuring that you curl your hair evenly.

Section your hair into half and put up the top section with your hair clips. For those with thicker or finer hair, you may want to go for three sections instead to ensure no strand gets left behind.

Step 3: Start Curling Your Hair

Begin curling your hair starting from the area closest to your ear. Grab a small section and place it between your straightener.

For a start, curl your hair inwards towards your face and ensure that you twist the straightener for a full round.

Note that the slower your curl it, the more defined the curl will be. If you are looking to achieve bouncy curls, leave it a little longer. For the opposite effect of soft, loose wave-like curls, curl it quick.

Using the ghd Platinum+ styler, we curled our hair following this step and like the product promised, the device maintained optimum temperature without damaging or “burning” the hair. The high gloss plates of the Platinum+ styler is made up of infinity sensors that can monitor heat 250 times a second and true enough, even while it was running on 185 degrees heat, it did not make our hair uncomfortable or sorts.

After you have completed one full round, drag the straightener down to the tip of your hair.

To reinforce the curl, twirl your hair with your finger and let fall in place naturally.

Step 4: Brush the Curls

Once you are done curling the rest of your hair, simply brush them out to achieve natural-looking waves.

Tip: Remember curl your fringe away from your face to frame it.
